Astronomy students investigated parallax today with an activity that was as much direction following as anything! They looked at how distance to a star changes the parallax angle and how changing the baseline changes the parallax angle. In the photo above they use holes punched in card stock to change the baseline.
When we returned to the room I had the students gather around and we did the same but used an iPhone to shoot two photos. The lens was 3 cm on either side of the mid line. Note the tip of the pencil (near star) seen against a different background of more distant stars.
